My Harry Potter Introduction

Faith of GeekyZooGirl and Micheline of Lunar Rainbow Reviews are hosting the Harry Potter Month in July and I'm on board!  People can compete in the House Cup by accumulating house points.  I'll be earning said house points by posting about Harry Potter among other Harry Potter related activities! This year I will be representing Hufflepuff!

Lee at Rally the Readers shared her Harry Potter story and it's awesome!  You should definitely check out her post.  It's such a great idea, especially since this is the beginning of the month!  I thought I would share my introduction with you as well!

My Harry Potter Introduction:

Cue a 7-year-old chubby-cheeked child with a vivid imagination. (That's me!)  I was in second grade and spend most of my free time trying to read or playing with imaginary friends as well as my real friends.

I was in the library one day during school; I had read some Magic Tree House and all the Encyclopedia Brown books and I was looking for something new.  There was a display of books; I can't remember if it was just copies of Harry Potter or other books that had to do with magic.  I picked up a copy of Sorcerer's Stone and the librarian assured me that I would love this book.  I excitedly agreed because I liked everything at that age, well everything but those Animorphs books.  That day took home a copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone with greedy excitement.  And that was the beginning of everything.

It was 1998 and The Sorcerer's Stone had only come out a couple months before I picked it up.  I quickly fell in love with Hogwarts and all the characters, secretly wishing that my Hogwarts letter would come when I turned 11.  I would run around waving sticks in the air casting and dodging spells.  Needless to say, I've been hooked ever since!

I'm pretty sure I was all in from the get go.  It's hard to remember everything that happened in my Harry Potter story because I was so young when I found them, but I can tell you I was Hermione for Halloween three years in a row and I used that costume once more for a presentation I did in middle school before I grew out of it.  I may have even used it when I went to see the first movie in 2001 (I don't remember anything about the experience other than I was so so excited and that I finished rereading the book moments before we left to see the movie.)

  1. As much as I adore my own HP experience, a part of me is always envious of readers who got into the books as kids :) I can't imagine being any more obsessed with the series but I have a feeling that I would have been a total nut if I'd read them back then! I love that you dressed up as Hermione of THREE Halloweens and for a presentation at school ♥ Awesome post Alex :D

    1. Thanks! This is the tip of the iceberg. When I was in 5th grade I won a book of movie posters that had head shots of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I put them on my wall. I used to change in my closet because I was positive that they were moving pictures that stood still while I watched them because they didn't want me to find out.
I've got all sorts of fun stories like that. I'd love to hear about your HP experience! :D

  2. I love that you got to read Sorcerer's Stone so close to when it was first released! That's awesome! If I'd been a kid around that time, I'm sure I would have dressed up as a character from HP for Halloween. I also probably would have begged my parents for all kinds of HP stuff, lol. Thanks for sharing! :)

    1. I feel pretty lucky that I discovered the books when I did. I honestly can't remember much when Harry Potter wasn't part of my life.

  3. It's so much fun hearing how reading Harry Potter came about for you. Oh I WISH I was so young when first introduced to the series. That would've been amazing...all that dressing up and excitement. I was already graduated from high school when I began reading it. I have gotten to watch my son grow up with the love for the series though, and it's a lot of fun :D

  4. I love reading how other people were introduced to the Harry Potter series. There are so many different stories out there and Its amazing how so many people who were introduced to HP differently still ended up in the same place, being obsessed with Harry Potter, lol =D
I'm so jealous you started reading the series almost as soon as the first book released =D. I was like 3 when the books first released, so I didn't start reading them until all of them were released. This meant I missed out on all of the midnight releases and most of the hype :(. Although I still dressed up as Hermione for many Halloween's :D

  5. Aww that sounds adorable :) I was 12 when I first read the first book - I read it in Slovenian translation and it wasn't until book 4 that I got good enough in English to be able to read the original first!
But yeah, I was completely hooked, too, I even badgered my parents to buy me ink and a quill so I could write my diary with it ;)
