February 2020 TBR

Good Morning!

Today, I have my February TBR to share with you. I was pretty successful with my January TBR, so I'm excited to continue with my book journey in 2020. 

The Disney-a-Thon Pick:
Pocahontas  - Read a book featuring Native/Indigenous people
Race to the Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse- This is a carry over book from January. I started reading it at the end of the month and so far I am really enjoying it. I can't wait to see what happens to the main characters!

Recess: School's Out - Read a Middle Grade book
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart - This seems like the most Recess book I own. A secret society is absolutely something those kids would create with their imagination in this movie/show. I love the idea of a this story, but I don't know much because it seems like the kind of book where it's more fun to go into it blind.
OR
Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver - A good ghost story full of magic and mistakes sounds like good fun. I've been meaning to read this for years so this might be the perfect opportunity!

Series Picks:
The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater- I'm ready to finish this series! I'm so invested with all these characters, I just need to know how it ends. This book is definitely high priority this month.

Book Club Pick:
The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi - It's been spoken and we voted to read this book this month. We've previously read a book by Roshani Chokshi and really enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to this one. Bonus: it's a retelling of Hades and Persephone so it'll count toward my retelling bingo card!

January 2020 TBR

It's January TBR time!

Here's the thing about me, I love making lists and monthly TBRs but I am terrible at sticking to them. Right now, I'm reading at a rate where TBR don't really make sense; about two books per month tops recently and one of them is my book club book. BUT I'm still going to make a TBR! (I'm sure you didn't see that one coming.)

I've got a reasonable list, probably about one book per challenge I'm participating. I am giving myself grace to not finish books and change them based on my mood and if I feel like I'm falling into a slump. I want to increase my reading and I'm going to listen to myself and not force books that aren't interesting to me anymore.

Anyway, so I've got some guidelines for myself and I'm ready to share with you my picks for January!

The Disney-a-Thon Pick:
Pocahontas  - Read a book featuring Native/Indigenous people
Race to the Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse- While I was researching my retelling challenge for this year, I came across this book and it's coming out this month. It's a story inspired by Navajo lore, featuring a set of siblings with Navajo heritage. It sounds incredibly interesting and I'm also looking forward to rewatching Pocahontas! (Bonus it also counts toward the retelling challenge!)

Series Picks:
Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater- I read the first two books of this series at the end of 2019 and I really liked them. I'm definitely going to continue and finish it in the first quarter of 2020. And that starts with this book! I'm really intrigued as to where the story of Blue and the boys is going so here I am hoping to read this book this month!

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo -  This is another series that I started in 2019 and I'd really like to finish in 2020. I love Leigh Bardugo's writing and I'm excited to see where this story goes in the sequel!

Book Club Pick:
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott -  This is a reread for me; I've read it in the last couple years for the first time and really enjoyed it. We decided to read the book and then go see the new adaptation of it with Emma Watson and company.

August 2019 TBR

It's the beginning of August which means it's time to choose books and movies!

I think this is the first time the movie prompts fit perfectly with books I already wanted to read this month. So I'm extremely excited to be reading everything these!

The Picks:
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Read your favorite book growing up
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling - I'll be reading the illustrated edition, which I haven't actually read before. I love this story so so much, and it definitely has it's place near the top of my favorite books growing up. There's a lot of emotion associated with this series for me, so I'm excited to take the time this year to reread this gem again.

A Goofy Movie - Read a book featuring a parent/child relationship
Bridge of Clay by Markus Zuzak - This book I believe is all about a family and their estranged relationship with their father. I don't know too much about it, but I think I can pretty safely guess that  a parent/child relationship will be featured at least a little bit. I'm really hoping this book is excellent.

 

Book Club:
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens -  This was almost unanimously picked for our book this month. I've been hearing lots of good things about this book and so I can't wait to read it. I'll probably end up listening to it and I'm hoping it'll have a good narrator.

The Reading Rush 2019

I'm a sucker for a good read-a-thon and I've always participated in The Booktube-A-Thon to some varying degree. This year is no different, except they've changed the name. It's now called The Reading Rush (and the title is growing on me.) This year there's a website and badges that you can unlock. I'm loving these updates!

It's a week long, running July 22nd - 28th. There are seven challenges which I have below and a bonus challenge to read seven books. I know I'm not going to get through seven books, but I will enjoy trying! Because I can never make a decision on books, I've got several options for each challenge.

There are so many possibilities and it's likely that I'll only get through one book of these, but I'm hoping to get through at least the graphic novels. Who knows if any of these books will actually stick. We shall find out what I actually read. Happy reading all!

July TBR

July is upon us, well we're actually quite into July now and so it is time for my July book and movie picks!

The Picks:
Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet - Read a book that features the Internet/technology
Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman - This book features an Internet book scavenger hunt of sorts and I'm all for it! My friend, Maggie, recommended it to me and I trust her recommendations completely. I'm pretty sure I will love this book.

Finding Nemo - Read a book nominated for an award
The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton - This book was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award the year it was written. It didn't win, but that's okay, I've heard many good things about the author. It's set in present time and the past, and I'm a sucker for stories that are told that way.

Book Club:
The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton - Surprise! This is my book club pick too. I'm reading one book for two prompts this month and I love it!

June 2019 TBR

Restart! Welcome to the restart of my own reading challenge, Disney-a-thon. I tried kicking this off in April, but then I got a new job and have been working way more, and reading way less. I've decided to start again, since I didn't read any of the challenges in April.  In fact, I only read one book all month and May isn't looking to great either. So I'm going to go with two books, one from each collection.

The Picks:
Home on the Range - Read a book that takes place on a ranch or features a cowboy
Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman - A young woman goes west to seek vengeance for her father's death. I've been interested in this one for a while, but I'm kind of hesitant. I DNF'd the last book I tried to read by Erin Bowman. I am willing to give this one a shot though because it sounds so good!

Gunslinger Girl by Lyndsay Ely -A young woman with perfect aim and a knack at getting into trouble searches for her place in the wild wild west. I've had my eye on this book for a while and now seems like the perfect western book to fill this prompt.

I'm not sure which one of these books I'm going to read yet, but either way I'm ready to read about a ass-kicking female cowgirl!

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure - Read a book featuring a nature word in the title
When the Sky Fell on Splendor by Emily Henry - This book caught my eye immediately; it's got a Stranger Things vibe going on and I am totally here for it. I can't wait to check it out! (Also, the word is Sky, definitely a part of nature, in the broad sense of the word.)

Book Club:
This month I got to choose books! Apparently, I was really feeling a sci-fi three of four options were that genre. So as you can imagine a sci-fi book was chosen.

Once & Future by Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy - This is a gender-bent retelling of King Arthur in space! I mean, who wouldn't want to read this book! Needless to say, I'm so so excited to read this book.

Hopefully, I'll be able to get through these three books this month! I'll keep you updated.

April 2019 TBR

Welcome to the first ever Disney-a-thon monthly book picking. I've decided to go with three picks this month and see how that goes. If I don't get everything read, I'll know to adjust it for next month.

The Picks
Fantasia 2000 - Read someone else's favorite book
Epic by Conor Kostick - Fantasia 2000 was my younger brother's favorite movie when he was a kid. We watched it pretty regularly for years. So in honor of that, I'm going to read his favorite book. He found this one year in high school when he was systematically going through the sci-fi/fantasy section of our library.

One Hundred and One Dalmatians - Read a book with lots of chapters
Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas - This book has 66 chapters and that's "lots" of chapters in my book. I started this book in March and hopefully I'll complete it this month.

The Incredibles - Read a book featuring a character with a secret identity
Renegades by Marissa Meyer - Okay, I'm fairly certain this book has some secret identities seeing as it's about a couple factions of people with powers. I could be wrong but I'm really hoping to count this book!

I also participate in a book club every month so I'm going to throw our book in these TBRs too, because I can! Each month a different club member chooses what's supposed to be 3 books. (it's usually at least 4, but this month there were 5 options!) We vote from the options to see what book we'll actually read.  That way, each person is guaranteed to read a book they're interested at least twice a year.

This month Jillian chose books; we unanimously selected The Bookshop of Yesterdays by Amy Meyerson - A bookshop with a family mystery mixed in the middle. I'm quite interested in reading this book, I can't wait to dig into it.

January 2016

It's a new year and with new years there's time for a slight change with these TBR posts.  No more themes.  As the months went on, I felt increasingly confined by choosing themes and also my themes because much more vague to the point were they weren't really themes anymore. So I've decided to do a TBR Jar of sorts.  Five books on the list will be ones I want to read and five with be from my TBR jar.  I will (hopefully) read at least one book from each of those categories.
